As another heat wave casts over the country potato growers are very concerned about the impact of the prolonged drought on crops. Potato crops are under significant moisture stress in many areas. While it is anticipated that there will be sufficient potatoes to meet market demand, the major concern is the economic viability of growers. If yields are reduced by up to 40% which is the case in some regions – the economics simply do not stack up. Growers cannot continue producing a crop at a loss, and there is a real risk that some will not be in a position to plant potatoes next year.
Across Europe, test yield digs all show significant reductions on last year. The impact of prolonged drought conditions across the continent is taking its toll. In the U.K. there is still interest and stronger prices quoted for best quality old crop whites from buyers. New crop whites are clearing to contract. There is only limited free buy interest but growers are holding crop back because of concerns over yield and the need to cover contract commitments.
