PotatoPotato Market Reports

Potato Market Report 13th August

Potato markets were substantially subdued for the past number of weeks. Sales did pick up slightly last week with cooler weather. As families gear up for back-to-school season it is hoped that markets will bounce back. There is plenty of supply for the processing market this season. Some crops will be fit for desiccation by the end of the month as crops appear to be quite advanced.

Across Europe, in the processing sector, physical markets are reported to be ‘saturated’. Contracts are being cleared on time but excess to contract is almost impossible to place. Some factories are still clearing contracted old crop. There has been some interest in export, but buyers are waiting for samples to be fully skin set.

In the U.K. heavy rainfall over the last three weeks has come just in time for many crops. Lack of size may be an issue on unirrigated sites in the east. Agronomists are picking up defects.
