PotatoPotato Market Reports

Potato Market Update 31st May

Home consumption was slightly subdued this week due to high temperatures experienced. Last week saw the remainder of plantings complete. The peeling market remains strong as prices remain over €350/tonne. Supply of rooster potatoes is reported to be very tight. Some areas in Wexford have begun harvesting earlies potatoes; with more coming onto the market next week.

In Northern Europe, contracts are being cleared and buyers are keen for cover by coming back into the market this week. Stocks in France are tighter in comparison to this time last year and poor growing conditions are being reported in Spain which will result in fewer exports and high prices.

In the U.K, good demand has been reported and “in store promotions” are in place. Lifting of early crop for the bag sector is increasing in volume and demand is “reasonable” with values more stable. School holidays have taken some pressure off trade but suppliers continue to force prices higher. Irrigation has begun in parts of the U.K as weather conditions become warmer.
