PotatoPotato Market Reports

Potato Market Update 15th July

The food service sector continues to pick up pace but it is still falling significantly short of normal capacity. Demand remains strong for new season Queens with average yields reported; it is encouraging that all retailers are now stocking new season Queens which is earlier than last year. A lot of lifting progress has been made in the south-east and more volumes from the east coast will be coming onto the market in the coming week. At this point more stock has been cleared, compared to this point last year. The majority of Home Guard and Premier varieties have now been moved. Main season crop is progressing quite well and blight warning remains in place.

In the U.K. new season crop is now present in most markets. The rain this week has continued to support crop development. There are reports of growers holding off lifting in some regions, as the market continues to be largely well supplied.

The NEPG, North-Western European Potato Growers, estimates that the area for consumption potatoes increased 0.5% compared with last year, towards 621.148 ha. Most of the increase is in Germany and France, where it seems that transfers from processing to table potatoes has taken place. It is still too early to determine yield, which will ultimately determine volumes.
