Centenary Grain Price Announcement Positive – IFA
Speaking following the announcement of grain prices for harvest 2026 from Centenary Cooperative, IFA Grain Chair John Murphy said base prices of €216/t for green barley and €228/t for green wheat are better than what was feared in recent months.
“While all tillage farmers would like grain prices to be higher, the prices announced today are reflective of the recent improvement in global grain markets. Regrettably, this price still won’t be enough to cover the huge cost increases at farm level,” John Murphy said.
“The IFA Grain Committee would call on all other grain merchants and co-operatives to come out and at least match these base prices over the coming weeks”, he said.
“Our tillage sector remains under extreme economic pressure with moderate grain yields, rocketing machinery costs and stubbornly high fertiliser prices all contributing. Many growers will be seriously considering whether to plant cereals or not over the coming weeks,” the IFA Grain Chair continued.
“IFA strongly believes Government support remains essential in ensuring the tillage sector survives this prolonged period of very low returns.”
“At the National Ploughing Championships this week, IFA strongly urged Ministers and members of the Oireachtas to ensure that the sector is supported in Budget 2027,” John Murphy concluded.
