IFA to Hold Emergency Meeting for All Malting Barley Growers

IFA Grain Chair John Murphy has announced that IFA will be holding an emergency meeting for all malting barley growers on Mon, October 12th in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel, Carlow. (R93 N207) at 8pm.

The key issue for discussion is the margin in malting barley for 2026 and beyond. Malting barley is more costly to grow than feed barley, yet the price of feed barley is now on a par, or higher, than the malting barley price for 2026.

“IFA has been looking for a formal meeting with Boortmalt, but this was declined until late last week when Boortmalt said they would only meet IFA on condition that those representing IFA signed a legal Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). This would mean that we could not report back to our members on the meeting. This is not acceptable to IFA.”

“We feel it is absolutely imperative that Boortmalt meet to discuss the lack of a malting premium and the so-called €10/t parity charge in place for harvest 2026,” John Murphy said.

“We would encourage all malting barley growers to be in Carlow on Monday night. IFA President Francie Gorman will attend the meeting,” he concluded.
