Market Prices and News
Paris MATIF futures for Dec-26 rose sharply last week by €12.50/t to close at a contract high of €251.00 following continued disruption and missile strikes in the Black Sea region.
Prices this week have risen slightly again after Russia appeared to dismiss outright a Turkish initiative to allow exports resume from ports in the region. MATIF Dec-26 reached as high as €259/t in trading on Wednesday but closed at €257/t. At the time of writing on the morning of the 3rd September, prices have dropped €8-10/t.
French maize prices have crossed €270/t threshold and reached as high as €279/t.
In Chicago, prices for Dec-26 maize increased substantially in recent weeks and are now trading at $5.49/bushel (€186/t). This is as a result of Black Sea uncertainty and a sharp decline in maize crop ratings throughout August. Harvest of maize has commenced in the southern fringes of the corn belt.
Crop ratings for maize are 57% good with soya at 58% good.
Native grain prices have followed international markets up and remain volatile; dried wheat prices are trading at €250-255/t depending on the hour of the day with dried barley at €240/t.
No further price offers for green grain from the main co-operatives have been issued this week.
Spot malting barley prices have remained broadly similar to the last report at between €232-235/t, at the time of writing on 2nd September, price was at €235/t.
Rapeseed prices strengthened on Paris futures last week, primarily on the back of disruption to oilseed supply logistics in the Black Sea. Nov-26 futures gained €8/t last week to close on Friday 28th August at €546.25/t. Prices remain volatile this week and will closely watch crude oil prices which have returned to above $90/barrel. Rapeseed planting appears to be progressing in key countries such as France following beneficial rainfall at the end of August.
Global Grain Supply and Demand

EU rapeseed production is forecast at 19.4MMT, down 0.3MMT from the last estimate. Sunflower seed production is put at 9.45MMT.
In Australia, ABARES has revised upwards its estimates for the 26/27 wheat and barley crops, following higher planted areas and recent rainfall. Wheat production is expected to climb 3.1MMT to 29.9MMT with barley recovering by 2.3MMt to 16.4MMT, this production remains lower than last year’s record harvest.
