Market Prices and News
European grain prices drifted slightly lower during last week, but MATIF Dec-26 futures closed up on the week at €241.75/t. At the time of writing on Wednesday, October 7th, prices have crept higher by the order of €6/t closing at €247.50 on Tuesday night,
Markets remain underpinned by the complex Black Sea situation with several merchants vessels attacked this week.
EU maize prices have strengthened again as a result of the very poor harvest which is significantly ahead of schedule. French maize for Nov-26 is trading at €276/t at the time of writing. The poor EU crop has led to surge in EU imports from the US, 1.24 million tonnes were imported in August the highest since June 1982 (Karen Braun, Zaner AG).
On the currency front, the dollar/euro exchange rate has dropped sharply to its lowest point since May 2025. €1 is now $1.11-1.12, with a weaker euro a boost for EU grain exports in the global market. Grain of EU origin is reportedly successful in some of import tenders issued by Saudi Arabia (Agritel).
Last week Chicago maize futures slipped back sharply (-$12/t) to below $5/bushel in response to the USDA adjustments to maize supplies (details below). Prices this week, at the time of writing, have recovered and closed marginally above $5 per bushel (€175-176/t at current rates). Harvest progress has slowed across the Mid-West with wet conditions dominating at the end of September, maize is 23% cut.
All markets will be receptive to the world agricultural supply and demand estimates due to be published by the USDA on Friday this week.
No further prices for native grain have been published following last week’s announcements by Dairygold and Tirlan. Dried prices this week are changeable and are trading around €253-255/t for wheat.
Rapeseed prices fell last week, Nov-26 futures closed at €536.75/t, this week prices have oscillated between €523-540/t as this contract nears its expiry date. Feb-27 have approached €560/t a contract high. New crop contracts for Aug-27 are lower at €537/t.
Global Grain Supply and Demand Updates
USDA published its quarterly stock estimates on the 30th of September last. There was a significant upward revision of maize stocks. Stocks at 1st September were at 53.2MMT, a 35% increase year-on-year.
For wheat, USDA confirmed that farmers have harvested the smallest overall crop since 1970. Winter wheat production is the lowest since 1965 with spring wheat production at a 5-year low.
In Brazil, analyst Ag Rural has forecast Brazil’s 206/27 soybean crop to reach a record 182.7MMT, an increase of 100kT on the August estimate, this rise is on the back of larger expected planted area at 49.159 million hectares. Planting of this crop was 7.3% complete as of October 1st.
