Market Prices and News

Global prices have fallen back slightly this week after firming in the past 10 days as a result of geopolitical developments. Grain markets are taking a watching brief, but in contrast to energy, grain supply fundamentals are not changed as a result of ongoing war in Iran.

Euro/dollar exchange rates have fallen back to €1/$1.16 which slightly improves competitiveness of EU exports relative recent exchange rates of €1/$1.19

Paris MATIF May-26 futures have reached the symbolic threshold of €200/t again today after dropping back below earlier this week. Dec-26 futures are also higher at €213/t

Native dried grain prices remain similar to the last report at around €215/t spot for wheat depending on the day with barley slightly higher owing to better demand prospects.

This week Tirlan offered €180/t and €185/t for green, feed barley and wheat respectively.

The rise in oil prices is supporting other oilseeds such as rapeseed and soybeans globally. Brent crude futures in London jumped 13% alone on Monday to $82.13/ barrel. Paris rapeseed prices have gained; old crop futures (May-26) have risen by €13/t since Friday 27th Feb to the symbolic threshold of €500/t. New-crop futures have also strengthened in excess of €480/t at the time of writing. Ex. farm prices have risen in Ireland with Tirlan offering €455/t for harvest 26.

IFA participated in the COPA COGECA Cereals and Oilseeds Working party earlier this week, soya meal prices were reported as €325/t in Germany with non-GM product trading at €431/t (UFOP).

Global Grain Supply and Demand

Demand for European barley remains firm from export countries. EU Commission’s figures last week reported that export pace was (+79%) higher than the same time in the 2024/25 marketing year (AHDB).

Analyst Expana has reduced its forecast for EU rapeseed production to 20.8MMT down from earlier figures of 20.9MMT. This is higher than the 20MMT produced in 2025, reports from Germany suggest rapeseed production could exceed 4MMT thanks to 60k hectare increase in area.

The EU Mars report for March indicated that crops across the Union were broadly in good condition. Some concerns exist in the far east and Baltic states over frost damage from low winter temperatures.
