Demand and consumption remain relatively stable. There is a slight increase in demand from the food service sector. A good market remains for pre-packing quality potatoes, however they are becoming increasingly scarce. Delayed harvest in the back end and lack of desiccants are reported to have caused quality issues in store. Early growers continue to harvest as crops become fit, demand is strong and quality excellent to date.
In the European processing sector, factories are clearing their contractual commitment as best they can but sales of product are still behind expectation. Shut downs for maintenance and holidays will take place from July onwards and there are indications that contract loading of the old crop could last into August. Crop estimates in many regions estimate that area is back some 10-15% in many regions.
