The bank holiday weekend saw a small increase in sales. Demand remains strong for pre-packing quality material as stocks continue to tighten. A number of loads of potatoes have now been exported to the continent, which has helped to stabilise markets. Planting continues across the country, although conditions are very good at present, many growers have stated that it’ll be another two weeks at least before completion. This is considerable later than last year and already growers are concerned about desiccation options.
Across Europe, in the processing sector, temporary shut-downs are stalling the delivery of contracts. Rejection rates and deductions are increasing “but the crop is moving”. Planting will be complete by the end of this week but drought conditions are developing in France and irrigation has started in central areas.
