Growers dependant on the food service sector have been hit once again, with the announcement that level 5 restrictions will remain in place until March 5th and restaurants to remain closed beyond this. Good quality stock for the packing trade is tightening and demand remains strong. Stocks could become tight earlier than expected with increased reports of high tare values and reduced yields.
Exports of ware potato from the U.K. to Ireland is reported to be picking up as exporters are overcoming issues with documentation. The use of heat-treated pallets is also “essential”. Problems exist with exports to mainland Europe where the exact requirements for documentation does not seem to be fully agreed at border crossings, which is leading to hold ups.
In Europe Physical trade has been flat over the last week. Demand from processing factories has been focused on contracts. The fresh sector is described as firm and stable.
