Shannon Cfram Falls Down on Single Agency to Manage River

IFA President Joe Healy said the Draft Shannon CFRAM to tackle flooding, launched today by OPW Minister Sean Canney, falls short as there is no proposal for a single agency to manage the river.

Joe Healy said the long overdue flood risk management plan will be examined by IFA over the coming weeks, but an immediate issue is the failure to propose a single agency to manage the multiple issues that need to be addressed.

The IFA President also pointed out that environmental designations must not be allowed to hold back necessary work that needs to be carried out to alleviate flooding. The public good must be paramount in decisions on the protection of households, farmland and other businesses along the river and surrounding areas.

IFA will be meeting Minister Sean Canney next week and will bring the Association’s concerns to his attention.
