Demand for Potatoes Remains Firm

Demand continues to remain firm across the potato market segments. The amount of white potatoes remaining in store is far lower than last year. With the free buy price very strong in the UK imports are non-existent, resulting in demand for quality whites far exceeding domestic supply.

It would appear that export markets have been sourced for Kerrs pinks with some sample loads having left for the UK and the continent this week. As growers continue to consider planting decisions, it is necessary to analyse the domestic and European plantings areas from 2016. Although we had a reduction in overall production this year in Ireland, this is a result of reduced yield despite the 5% increase in area which was planted. The European story is similar with a 5% increase in area, but a greater decrease in yield which gave a 3% reduction in production.
