Demand for Potatoes Surprisingly Strong

Demand for potatoes continues to remain surprisingly strong this week despite the typical post-Christmas lull in the market. Some of this, is no doubt linked to the improved perception of potatoes as a key component of a healthy balanced diet.

Farm gate prices have steadied again since Christmas. These should now improve significantly over the coming months, as it is unacceptable that prices post-Christmas should be less than in October, when storage costs incurred etc. have increased the production cost significantly.

In western Europe, it would appear likely that there will be insufficient stock in Belgium and Holland to meet processing demand. This will ensure a strong free buy price for the rest of this season on the continent which ultimately creates a positive effect on the domestic market here in Ireland also.
