Highest Calf Welfare Standards Must Be Followed

IFA Dairy Chairman Tom Phelan said dairy farmers care for all their animals, including calves, and adhere to the highest welfare standards.

IFA has developed a dairy calf policy which sets out the responsibilities for farmers, the industry, State agencies and the Government.  In recent months, IFA has been working with all stakeholders to progress our proposals.

“There must be zero tolerance towards any form of cruelty to calves. If anybody has information of any abuse or cruelty by an individual or individuals, they must report it to the authorities. We expect the authorities to apply the full rigours of the law,” he said.
