New Farmer Support Measures to Be Activated by Eu Commission
The EU Commission has announced a package of measures to support farmers during the current income crisis. The package was agreed following this week’s meeting of the EU Agriculture Council.
Measures include:
- Doubling of intervention ceilings for skimmed milk powder and butter
- Temporary increase in allowable state aid to €15,000 per year per farmer with no national ceiling
- Market observatory for the beef and pig meat sectors to be created
- Additional funding for promotional support for exports of pigmeat and dairy products
- Further private storage aid supports for more pig products to be examined
- Commission wants Member States to prioritise engagement with EIB to develop appropriate financial instruments to assist farmers and processors
- Voluntary dairy supply management to be allowed on a temporary basis
- Feasibility of an export credit scheme to supplement schemes run on a national basis to be examined.
IFA reaction
IFA continues to call for greater flexibility under enhanced APS powder scheme; at least one year’s suspension on Superlevy repayments; suspension of EU import tariffs on fertilisers; and, all measures necessary to reverse the Russian ban on imports.
