Proposed EU Organic Regulation Changes Would Enhance the Organic Food Supply Chain
IFA Organic Project Team Chair John Fitzpatrick said the initial results for the trilogue negotiations on amendments to the Organic Regulation would enhance the organic food supply chain in the EU.
“Any reduction in red tape for organic farmers while maintaining high EU Organic Standards is a positive development,” John Fitzpatrick said.
“For example, it is difficult for Organic pig and poultry farmers to source organic protein feed. A derogation to allow the use of non-organic protein feed for organic pigs and poultry is necessary until a readily available organic protein feed source is established,” he said.
“The revised regulation would reduce any potential disturbance to international trade while providing consistency for operators across the EU for organic food supply. It is vital any non-EU food imports coming into the EU market continue to be of equal or higher standards to that of the EU Organic Regulation,” the IFA Organic Project Team Chair said.
“The change in regulations will sustain the reliability of the EU organic sector while upholding a credible EU organic label,” John Fitzpatrick concluded.
