Beef Update

IFA Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden said the SCEP scheme is an important first step in support of suckler farmers and it is vital that everybody is facilitated in participating, and receives the full payment rates for all of their reference number of cows. However, he said this scheme is only one part of the supports promised to suckler farmers by the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue, with the replacement scheme for BEEP-s still to be put in place. Brendan Golden said the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue was widely quoted in his interviews following Budget ’23 last October, promising a further €90/cow in the BEEP-s replacement scheme. “The Minister for Agriculture promised suckler farmers a €90/cow scheme to replace the BEEP-s, to be paid in conjunction with the new SCEP scheme.  He must now come forward with his proposals to deliver this to farmers as we build towards the target of €300/cow,” he concluded.

Sheep Update

IFA President Tim Cullinan has condemned the physical assault on a farmer in the Glenmalure Valley in Wicklow when walkers insisted that dogs be allowed access to the route. Tim Cullinan said this was a disgraceful attack on a landowner who was one of the first in the country to allow an agreed access route across his lands over 15 years ago. “The Mountaineering Council has come out strongly and condemned this attack and I want to acknowledge their support for Pat Dunne and his family,” he said. Tim Cullinan said this type of incident is a serious setback for the relationship between landowners and recreational users. IFA Sheep Chair Kevin Comiskey said IFA’s campaign No Dogs Allowed is now in its third year and we have to see action from the authorities. He said this is a critical time of year on sheep farms as lambing is underway. Dog attacks are causing unimaginable suffering for sheep and lambs and huge economic losses for farmers.
