Market Prices and News
Global grain markets held firm in the opening week of trading for 2026, Paris MATIF futures for May-26 closed at €192.75//t on Friday 9th January. Geopolitical uncertainty and Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Markets have seen losses this week following the publication of the USDA WASDE report (details below) which provided very bearish sentiment on global grain supply and stock levels.
Chicago maize futures for March 2026 tumbled to around $4.20/bushel (€139-140/t) down from $4.45 before the report, this is the lowest price since August 20th last (Agritel).
MATIF wheat futures have held traded in the €188-190/t range for March contracts. New crop futures (Sep/Dec 26) are slightly higher at €195-200/t approximately.
At home, dry wheat is between €212-215 spot, with demand reported as poor. Barley is similar at €212-217/t.
Imported maize is €215-220/t with soya meal at €350/t.
Rapeseed prices have recovered the heavy losses experienced in the early days of January. Geopolitical instability in Venezuela and Iran has seen crude oil prices increase which in turn supports the oilseed complex and demand for biodiesel products. May-26 Paris futures gained €20.25/t last week to close at €464.50/t, prices this week are broadly similar at €461/t at the time of writing. New crop prices for Aug 2026 are lower at €447/t.
Global Grain Supply and Demand
The USDA released its January 2026 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates on Monday evening.
World wheat production was increased by +4.4MMT to 842.2MMT – a new record
Wheat ending stocks climbed to 278.25MMT up from 274.87MMT last month
World maize production is pitched at 1,296 MMT, this is a revision of 13MMT on last month
Maize production in the USA for 2025/26 is estimated at 432MMT, a very substantial increase of 54.1MMT more than 2024/25.
Global soybean production is revised upwards by 3.14MMT to 425.68MMT, production in Brazil is expected to account for 178MMT alone.
