Steady as she goes, with no change in quotes from pig processors again this week. While some European countries had a period of instability due to over exposure to export markets such as China, these markets have recovered and are showing weekly increases.
The concern over ASF remains the key issue for pig producers and it has caused the worldwide disruption to the pigmeat market. The ever-evolving situation with coronavirus is having an impact on all trade to China and may delay the expected increase in pigmeat exports to that market. IFA Pigs Chairman called on all retailers this week to realise that they cannot take food for granted any longer, as they have done with pigmeat for many years. The days of breakeven margins and below cost selling have to end. We need a sustainable food producing industry where everyone can survive.
