Pig Market Update 17th August

Following the 4c/kg pig price reduction announced on Friday 6th August, prices remain static for this week’s pigs with no changes in quotes from the main pig processors. Ireland is down to quotes either side of €1.60c/kg today and this is only barely covering the cost of production. With grain markets still rising, a break – even figure could be heading for €1.70c/kg soon. EU markets remains in decline with the average pig price down to €1.42c/kg. Throughput issues in mainland UK due to staff shortages have been replicated in Northern Ireland in the past few weeks. The staffing issue is becoming a real concern for all Irish meat processors, and it is a constant struggle on pig farms to recruit suitable workers.
