Pig Market Update 19th January

Pig prices remain unchanged in plants this week following last week’s 4c drop in some of the factories. This week, again, farmers are receiving quotes of €1.40c/kg up to €1.44 or €1.46 – €1.50/kg. The weekly throughput figure was 71,126 for week ending 16/01/21.

  IFA Pigs Committee and members gathered in Tallaght earlier this week to highlight their plight and to call on all stakeholders to support Bord Bia Quality Assured pigmeat. With further feed price increases of €35/ton at the beginning of the month, all input costs soaring and pig price following a separate trend, pig farmers are now haemorrhaging losses of almost €53,000 for the month of January according to Teagasc, which translates to €37.84 per pig.   

On the European market, pig prices have remained largely unchanged however pig prices in Denmark have fallen by 3.6% at 60% carcass, Italy’s pig price has fallen too since the beginning of the year which is largely due to ASF case.
