Pig Market Update 21st September

The pig price has held for this week in the main. Quotes today are at €1.52/1.54c/kg, with many suppliers still receiving around €1.54-1.58c/kg from plants. While rising feed costs have pushed farmers into negative margins, critical labour shortages remain a concern for farmers as the lack of labour availability to process pig meat is making it difficult for some farmers to sell their pigs.  The European & UK pig price has remained mainly unchanged except for France & Spain who have experienced a 4c drop in price.  Due to the low German pig price and slaughter capacity here it’s now more difficult to sell cull sows.
