Pig Market Update 23rd August

There was no announced change to Irish pig prices last Friday. Irish pig farmers are reporting quotes of €2.38 – €2.42 and upwards available among Irish processing plants across the island.

The supply of fattening pigs has significantly decreased, and supplies are back circa 11% year to date.

The average European price for a grade E carcass pig for week 32 was 241.5c/kg which is 22% higher than prices for the same week last year according to the Commission.

Pigmeat imports into Ireland are back 13% in tonnes for the period Jan-June 2022 when compared with this year. Last year, for that period, 44,816 tonnes of pigmeat were imported into Ireland. That has now reduced to 38,767 tonnes according to data from the Central Statistics Office. The Teagasc Pig Feed Cost and Price Monitor for July shows that composite pig feed prices remain high at €430/tonne.  This is circa €45 less than it was for the same month last year. Feed prices continue to put strains on pig farmers, in particular for those purchasing feed from compound millers.
