Pig Market Update 29th June

There was no change to Irish pig prices last Friday with farmers reporting quotes of €2.34 – €2.42 available among Irish processing plants.  

The average European price for a grade E carcass pig for week 23 was 245.6/kg which is 31% higher than prices for the same week last year.  

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, Croatia reported the first occurrence of African swine fever (ASF) in the country on June 27, 2023. The outbreaks occurred on June 23 on two farms with 40 and 8 susceptible pigs. Both farms are located in Drenovci, Vukovarsko-Srijemska near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the WOAH report, sampling and preliminary control measures were immediately ordered with zoning and epidemiological investigation ongoing.

The beginning of winter barley harvest in France shows satisfactory results, both in terms of quality and quantity. Harvesting operations are progressing but could come to a halt with unfavourable weather expected tomorrow over much of France.

AHDB reports that forecast rains in the US have added further pressure to US soyabean markets and in turn have further weighed on rapeseed prices. Nov-23 Paris rapeseed futures closed at €441.00/t on Tuesday, down €7.75/t from Mondays close. Brent crude oil markets also closed down Tuesday, which is likely to have added additional pressure to rapeseed prices too.
