Pig Market Update 29th March

Irish pig prices increased by 6c/kg this week, with farmers reporting quotes of €2.28 as an average price. Farmers are however reporting quotes of up to €2.38/kg from processing plants in Ireland. 

Prices on the European market continue to increase and there are significantly higher prices available in other MS including France €2.85 and Spain €2.62. Pig supply continues to fall across all major European pig producing countries. 

 The weekly throughput for week ending 19th of March 2023 was 64912, of which 1395 were sows. The ROI weekly pig kill is running circa 11% below this time last year. 

Matif March Delivery: Prices had decreased in the last two weeks; wheat is now €259 a reduction from €300 in mid-February. Maize followed a similar pattern and is currently circa €257. 

There are reports of ASF hitting China pig herds again but it’s not known to what extent. 

The average European Pig Price for week 10 was €2.30/kg according to the European Commission which is 30% higher than prices for the same week last year.
