Pig prices have fallen this week in some factories by 4cents/kg with farmers receiving quotes of €1.40c/kg up to €1.44 or €1.46 – €1.50/kg from some plants. The weekly throughput figure was 56,113 for week ending 09/01/21.
Feed prices have seen a further increase this month of €35/ton which further hampers the price squeeze pig farmers are experiencing at present. Pig farmers are now losing €35 per pig, a figure which is simply unsustainable. Pig farmers are calling on consumers to purchase Irish Bord Bia QA pigmeat.
On the European market, pig prices have remained largely unchanged and have stabilised for the first few weeks of the year, although at the lower end. ASF has been reported in a wild boar in Italy but no further cases have been detected there which is positive. Adherence to strict biosecurity measures remains crucial.
