IFA Calls for Re-opening of Rural Road Improvement Scheme

IFA Deputy President + Countryside spokesman Eddie Downey has called on Transport Minister Leo Varadkar to reverse the decision to suspend the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) which provides necessary funding for the maintenance and repair of non-county roads.
Mr. Downey said, “This scheme provides important support for the repair of many rural roads that are now failing into disrepair. Funding for the scheme can be sourced by diverting unspent budgets allocated for gritting and salting of rural roads, which were not required this winter.”

Concluding, Eddie Downey urged Minister Varadkar to recognise the need for sustainable regional development and ensure that the LIS is re-opened and a rural roads repair and maintenance programme is completed.
