IFA Animal Health Chairman Bert Stewart has strongly criticised the lack of action by the Department of Agriculture in providing a cost effective and competitive fallen animal collection service as farmers in parts of the country are left without a service to collect fallen sheep.

IFA President Eddie Downey has warned retailers against discounting of fresh produce in the run-up to Christmas, where growers are used as pawns in a vicious battle over market share. He said, “The use of below-cost selling of farm produce as a tool to drive footfall undermines Irish production and the financial viability of specialist growers. These growers have invested hugely in their farm businesses to supply a plentiful crop of fresh Irish produce for Christmas. Retailers have to respect this investment”.
Addressing an IFA protest of grain farmers outside Glanbia House in Kilkenny today (Monday), IFA President Eddie Downey accused Glanbia of short-changing hard-pressed tillage farmers on feed grain prices paid this harvest.
IFA President Eddie Downey led a delegation, with the National Livestock Chairman, Henry Burns, to meet the Egyptian Ambassador, her Excellency Soha Gendi in Dublin this week on the opportunities for the reopening of the live cattle trade between Ireland and Egypt.
