IFA Deputy President Richard Kennedy said that IFA has concluded a two-year malting barley deal with Boortmalt for crop 2017 and 2018. Growers, this Tuesday (18 April), can sell up to 15% of this year’s crop at the fixed price offer of €164/t.
IFA National Livestock Chairman Henry Burns has said the cattle trade is stronger this week, driven by extremely tight supplies and factories not being able to get numbers; a big jump in cattle prices in Britain and Northern Ireland; and, farmers demanding more.
Following a meeting between IFA and senior management in Musgrave’s in Cork this week, IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman, John Lynskey said Supervalu will make the full change over to new season lamb from next week and, along with other retailers making similar moves, this will increase demand and should boost lamb prices.
IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman John Lynskey said the lamb prices are rising driven by a strong trade and very scarce supplies. He said the factories are struggling to get numbers to meet market demand and have increased prices to €4.70/kg up to 22.5kg carcase weight in places.
