PotatoPotato Market Reports

Potato Market Update 13th January

Retail demand remains high as trade appears to be at similar levels to the first lockdown back in March. Takeaway chip shops are better prepared than during the first lockdown, however, growers supplying the processing sector have continued frustration with little clarity as to when the lockdown situation may improve. Tare levels are also reported to be excessively high, which could lead to a shortage before new crop comes onto the market.

Trade is described as lacklustre in the U.K. this week following the Christmas period and post Brexit arrangements. Packers remain quite busy but a lot of throughput is through contracted supply.

In Europe, free buy prices are currently very weak and they are not being helped by the need to clear stores because of signs of sprouting. Similarly, lockdown measures are causing various market disruptions.
