Potato Market Update 23rd March

Promising forecasted weather conditions will allow growers to proceed with plantings later this week when ground conditions improve. The costs of production will certainly impact growers planting decisions for the upcoming season. Energy costs are having a huge impact on growers storing potatoes at present and these spiralling costs must be recognised and paid for by potato packers and retailers.

World Potato Markets reports that increasing input costs are starting to have an impact on the supply industry. Growers have cancelled loads of seed in favour of growing other crops and Northern Europe “could be heading for its smallest crop for many years”. Fresh markets are described as “flat” with prices broadly unchanged this week. A change in production from fresh to processing is anticipated for next season.
